JURY

 

Marco Renzi (President – Italy)

Born in Abruzzo, he was graduated with full mark in violoncello, piano, organ, organ composition and composition. Composer of numerous incidental music, he has been President on the jury in national and international competitions. He is the art director for the Società dei Concerti “P. Riccitelli” in Teramo, art director for the Orchestra Sinfonica (I.C.O.) della Provincia di Bari, director for the Centro di Ricerche di Casa Pçiccinni, art director for the 1st edition of “Settembre della Minerva”, concert season organized by the Ministry of Education in Rome.

From 1988 up until today, he has been director at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory in Bari, previously directed by Maestro Nino Rota. On May 2001 he invited the famous conductor Maestro Riccardo Muti to give him, in the name of the teaching body, the titular conducting at the “N. Piccinni” conservatory in Bari.

 

Guido Barbieri (Italy)

He teaches History of music and music history and aesthetics at the “A. Scontrino” conservatory in Trapani. He is the music advisor for the radio channel 3 of RAI. In 2001, for Rai Sat Show, he carried out the presentation of the complete cycle about G. Verdi’s works to commemorate this great composer. He has music critic for “Il Messaggero di Roma”, “Il Gazzettino di Venezia”, now he writes for “La Repubblica”. He has organized shows, meetings and concert seasons for Cidim. He has written for numerous specialized magazines (Musica e Dossier, Giornale della musica, Suono, Amadeus, Piano Time, Applausi, Leggere, Sistema Musica). He has written two books: a Monograph dedicated to Georg Friederich Haendel and a guide to listening to “Le Nozze di Figaro” by Mozart. Moreover he has contributed to the realization of works and translations for numerous record companies (Deutsche Grammophon, Rca, Edi Pan) and publishers (Curci, Studio Tesi, Einaudi).

 

Ian Garland

 is an internationally renowned concert pianist, composer and music producer. He trained at Cardiff University and the Royal Academy of Music in London and now works with orchestras and as a soloist all over the world, having this year already performed the Rachmaninov Paganini Variations, Rachmaninov 2nd and 3rd Concertos and the Grieg Concerto. He frequently runs masterclasses and lectures at universities and conservatoires and his composition “The Lamont Overture” recently won a prestigious ASCAP Award for the Lamont Symphony Orchestra in Denver, USA. This year, Ian will be premiering his new work “Amaranthine: Songs of Time” at the Purcell Room in London and it is being recorded on Sony. His Grammy Award-winning production of “Child of the Promise” continues to tour the USA and the Far East.

 

Valerio Premuroso (England)

He was born in Milan, where he studied at the Conservatiry “G. Verdi”. With the patronage of the National Music Council of China, he held many concerts in Taipei, Kao Hsiung-Takao and in the main cities of Taiwan. He was  invited in Venezuela in 1998 by the Consejo Nacional de Cultura and he inaugurated the Latin American piano competition “F. Chopin” with a tournèe in  Caracas and in some cities of that Country. Now he teachees at the State Conservatories of Milan. Moreover he collaborates with some important publishers in music field, as Ricordi and Unocopli. Since 2001 he has been the president of the “Circolo Filologico Milanese”, one of the most oldest cultural institution of Milan whose, since 1986, he is responsible for the music section.

 

Vincenzo Cipriani (Italy)

Pianist and organist, he studied at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory in Bari and he graduated with full marks. He has held an intence concert activity in chamber formations, as an organist and choirmaster. In 1988, he founded and conducted the polyphonic choir “Psallite Deo” and he is currently the President of the “Associazione Lemurge Progetto Cultura”.

He is also founder and art director of the International Competition “Premio Benedetto XIII” in Gravina. He has organized Music events such as “Oratorio di Natale” with tha prestigiosus partecipation of Prof. Michele Mirabella as speaker. He holds the chair at the “E. Duni” Conservatory in Matera.

 

INTERNATIONAL “BENEDETTO XIII” PIANO PRIZE

COMPETITION GRAVINA IN PUGLIA BARI ITALY

COMPETITION RULES

 

Art.1 – The Association “Lemure Progetto Cultura no profit”,  having received a prestigious award, a shield of honour from the President of Italian Republic,organizes the 4th International “Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize Competition in Gravina in Puglia divided in three sections: - Young Talents’ section for pianists -  Young Talents’ section for players with stringed and wind instruments -  “Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize section.

It is open to all pianists of all nationalities. It shall be held at the Congress Hall of Banca Popolare di Puglia e Basilicata in Gravina in Puglia (Bari), Piazza Cavour on May 23rd , 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th  2006.

Participants must fill in the enclosed application form and send it  by 12th May 2006 (validity will be attested by the postmark date) to: Segreteria 4° Concorso Pianistico Internazionale “Premio Benedetto XIII” Ass. Lemurge Progetto Cultura no profit” via Bari 14, 70024 Gravina in Puglia (Bari) – Italy.

The following documents must be enclosed:

-          Photocopy of an identity document

-          Admission application (using the enclosed form or its photocopy).

-          A postal order (the amount is indicated in the art. 6) registered in the name of Segreteria 4° Concorso Pianistico Internazionale “premio Benedetto XIII” Ass. Lemurge Progetto Cultura no profit, Via Bari 14, 70024 Gravina in Puglia – Bari – Italia.

Moreover, competitors may send their application form properly filled in by email at this address: iscrizioni@premiobenedettoxiii.com in size pdf world or rtf. Your photo can be enclosed with the application form or can be enclosed in size jpg.

The admission fee can not be returned under any circumstances.

By Italian Law nr. 196/2003 about protection of personal data will be realized only for contest organization and to send you news about its activities and  personal data are strictly confidential; at any time you’ll be able to have them modified, updated or deleted free of charge. The Court of Bari is responsible of possible disputes.

 In the young talents’ section each participant may enrol in more than one section in the competition. Moreover, each competitor can take part in a category superior than the one of his / her type, writing on his / her application for enrolment.

Participants, at the beginning of the audition, must present a written and signed copy of the chosen program, an identity document and a copy of the pieces that will be performed.

The calendar of the performances can be requested to the Secretariat the week before the beginning of the competition.

Latecomers can be listened to at the end, if the Judging Committee considers valid the reason of their delay.

The Jury, composed by renowned members of the musical milieu, will give his judgement at the end of each performance. The members of the jury who have prepared the candidates can’t vote.

The decision of the Jury is in any case unappealable and final; moreover the Jury can reserve the right to not award prizes in the case that the required requisites are not found in the candidate.

 

The Association “Lemurge Progetto Cultura” declines all responsibilites for damages during the competition. Performances will be public.

Registration to the competition implies unconditioned acceptance of the rules herein and to resigns every right about TV shooting and recording.

Art.2 – The piano competition is divided into three sections:

-          “Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize (Participants born on 1969 onwards)

-          Young Talents for pianists (divided in three age categories)

-          Young Talents for players with stringed and wind instruments (divided in three age categories)

 

The “Piano Prize Benedetto XIII” section, is further divided into:

Eliminatory round: program of your choice with a maximus duration of 15 minutes.

Semi-final round: program of your choice with a minimum of 20 minutes and maximus duration of 25 minutes (In the semi-final round candidates can’t repeat pieces presented in the eliminatory round).

Final round: program of your choice with a minimum duration of 35 minutes and a maximus of 40 minutes. (In the final round candidates can repeat only a piece presented in the eliminatory or semi-final round on condition that it lasts no more than 10 minutes).

Playing from memory isn’t compulsory during the first examination (elimination) and the second examination (semi-final). Participants must perform from memory during the third examination (final).

 

Young Talents’ sections for pianists and for players with stringed and wind instruments are further divided in three categories:

Cat. A – Participants born on 1st January 1995 onwards (program of your choice with a maximus duration of 5 minutes) only a performance;

Cat. B – Participants born on 1st January 1991 onwards (program of your choice with a maximus duration of 10 minutes) only a performance;

Cat. C – Participants born on 1st January 1988 onwards (program of your choice with a maximus duration of 15 minutes) only a performance.

Participants are under no obligation to play from memory.

 

Art.3 – The decision of the Jury will be expressed in hundredths.

a)“Benedetto XIII Piano Prize” section

The admission to the semi-final round and to the final round is set out by the qualifying judgment of the majority of the Judging Committee.

The finalist results will be defined according to the Jury’s vote in points in hundredths.

The Committee reserves the right to decide about the numbers of candidates to admit to the final round, no more than 5 participants.

1st class. Points between 95 to 100;

2nd class. Points between 90 to 94;

3rd class. Points between 85 to 89.

For the possible 4th and 5th classified the points mustn’t be lower than 75/100.

Ex aequo aren’t provided.

 

b)”Young Talents” sections – Cat. A, B, C;

-          1° class. The points will be between 95 to 100;

-          2° class. The points will be between 90 to 94;

-          3° class. The points will be between 85 to 89;

-          Diploma on merit: at least 75/100;

Participation diploma for all the competitors.

 

Art.4 – Prizes

-          “Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize section

1st classified: Diploma + Prize worth Euro 3000.00 + 1 Concert prize with the Symphony Orchestra of Bari province (the date will be fixed afterwards; the winner will receive an attendance fee + repayment of journey and accommodation expenses); n.1 recital offered by The Music Association “Il Coretto” Bari; n.1 (with date and expense to be agreed upon by the pianist and musical institution);

2nd classified: Diploma + Prize worth Euro 1500.00.

3rd classified: Diploma + Prize worth Euro 1000.00.

Participation Diploma for all the competitors.

 

“Young Talents” sections

Prizes will be awarded to the first classified of each category; if in each category there were more first winners, the prize will be given to the candidate with the highest points.

Cat.A First class. Diploma and prize consisting of Euro 100.00;

Cat.B First class. Diploma and prize consisting of Euro 230.00;

Cat.C First class. Diploma and prize consisting of Euro 280.00.

 

Art.5 – Prizes shall be subject to the existing tax laws.

All the first prize winners in the “Young Talents” sections cat. A, B, C, the first three classified in the “Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize section are obliged to participate in the concluding concert to be held on 28 May 2006 at 7.00 in the evening at the Congress Hall of “Banca Popolare di Puglia e Basilicata”. They will receive the prizes in the presence of the Judging Committee, the city and church Authorities and the public. Winners who don’t participate at this Prize Concert will not be awarded a prize, even if their absence will be justified.

Competitors cannot claim economic rights for any Competition performance or for the prize winners’ concert. Rights in all Competition performances, recordings or films and no fee is payable to any competitor for performances, recordings or television broadcasts of them.

 

 

Art.6 – Admission fee:

“Young Talents” sections for pianists and for players with stringed and wind instruments:

Cat.A - €40.00; Cat.B - €50.00; Cat.C - €55.00.

“Benedetto XIII” Piano Prize €90.00.
